Community Programs for 2009-2010

ST. LUKE'S

Junior League volunteers are trained to operate the Vecta Distraction Station at St. Luke's Hospital-The Woodlands. The Vecta Distraction Station is a multi-sensory unit  that provides distractions to pediatric patients undergoing treatment at the hospital. The League members also volunteer in Labor and Delivery.

THE PEARL FINCHER MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

Junior League volunteers are trained as docents for school tours that provide hands-on activities for school groups. JL volunteers will also assist with Museum Family Days and other special events throughout the year. The primary focus for this program is children and family activities at the museum.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN

The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its member Leagues, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.  JL volunteers will coordinate and implement Kids in the Kitchen events open to the public that are driven by seasonal influences:  Back to School and Spring Break.

DONE IN A DAY

Done In A Day provides a quick response or short term project support for Junior League communities. JL volunteers  provide support for community projects that can be accomplished in a one-time evening or weekend effort. When nonprofit agencies are limited in achieving their goals because of lack of manpower, this program provides a dedicated group of JL volunteers to work on short-term projects. All projects meet a community need in North Harris and South Montgomery Counties.

 IMPACT

This conference provides parents and educators the hands on knowledge and tools/skills necessary to instill positive self-esteem within children and adolescents while addressing issues that surround low self-esteem. Past presenters include: Erin Gruwell of the Freedom Writers Foundation, Ron Clark, Disney's "2000 Teacher of the Year", Dr. Jack Canfield, author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Dr. Robert Brooks, self-esteem expert and author, and Dr. Michele Borba, noted author and NBC “Today Show” parenting contributor.

THE WOODLANDS CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

Junior League volunteers sponsor monthly literacy activities and field trips to the museum for students who may otherwise not get to visit. Visit "Read-a-lot Kingdom" where dress ups, puppets, and Fairy Tales come alive and writing your own book is only an idea away. Museum will re-open in early summer.

HERE TO HELP

Junior League volunteers provide long term hands-on services to area non-profit organizations. Recently, Junior League partnered with Interfaith The Woodlands to renovate the Family Services waiting area.
